Getting help for someone else
If a friend or family member is using drugs, this can be very difficult for you to cope with.
It's important for you to remember that it isn't your fault. Also, one of the most important things you can do for people who are using drugs is to help them get into drug treatment.
It will help you if you can find out more about drugs and their effects and try to understand the reasons why the person is using them. You can also try to support the person in getting help and keeping going when it gets difficult - treatment isn't always easy and giving up isn't easy. You can help by encouraging your friend or relative to get treatment and stick with it.
In Stockport there are 5 different drug services and lots of different types of help and support on offer.
Stockport has a dedicated young people's drug, alcohol and tobacco service, called MOSAIC.For adults, the following services are available:
The Community Alcohol Team
The Community Drug Team
ADS - Structured Day Care service
ADAS - the Alcohol and Drugs Abstinence Service
As well as helping your friend or relative, you might need some help and support yourself. All of these services can offer advice and information and some offer a dedicated programme for relatives, partners and carers (such as counselling and complementary therapies). On the Links page, there are details of national organisations that may be able to help you.
